Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) – If you accept LDW at the beginning of the rental (for an additional daily fee), your responsibility for loss of or damage to the vehicle is waived in full or in part (depending on the LDW plan accepted), provided the rental agreement is not violated. Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) – This optional coverage is available at many Thrifty locations. If available and accepted at the beginning of the rental, for an additional daily charge, the renter and any additional renter will be protected against third party auto liability at-fault claims for up to $1,000,000 if you are involved in an accident with other people. Unlike LDW, there are no credit card waivers for liability for a third party’s injury or property damage. You should make sure you are adequately covered for claims by third parties either by your own personal or business automobile policy or by the car rental company.

Personal Passenger Protection (PPP) and Personal Effects Insurance (PEI) – PPP is optional coverage available at most Thrifty offices and covers accidental death and accidental medical expenses for the renter who signs electing to be covered under the policy. PEI is an optional coverage that will protect the personal effects of the renter while in the rental car. Both coverages have specific limits. Full details can be found at the rental counter. Check with your insurance agent regarding your own insurance policies on accidental death or medical expenses, or refer to your homeowner’s policy regarding theft of your property.

Protection Plus (PP) – In Canada, where available, if you purchase PP, it will provide limited benefits to the authorized driver and passengers of the vehicle during the rental for accidental medical expenses, ambulance expenses and accidental death, repatriation, legal defense, emergency road service and mechanical breakdown towing benefits, and loss to personal belongings if certain conditions are met.

There is no such thing as an International Driver License. There IS a document, called an International Driving Permit, which is a translation of your current driver license, from whatever country you are from, into English, It is issued ONLY by the State Department or AAA BEFORE you leave your country to drive in the USA.

The reason for the IDP is rather obvious. When I was teaching driving, I had many foreign nationals take lessons, and when they showed me their “driver license” from Romania, Russia, Greece, Japan…etc., I couldn’t tell if they were showing me a driver license or their library card. The IDP takes care of that.

International Driving Permits

The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

The IDP is only a translation of information contained on a person’s foreign driver license and is not required to operate a motor vehicle in California. Citations issued to a person in California who has an IDP, but does not have a California driver license will be placed on the Department of Motor Vehicle database.

The IDP is also called an International Driver License, International License, etc.

Drivers License

Can I drive in Nevada with a driver license or instruction permit from another state or country?

Yes, Nevada honors licenses and permits issued by the appropriate government agency in another state or country. An International Driver License is not required for foreign visitors. Drivers under 18 must obey the restrictions listed under Nevada Teen Driving.

Nevada Revised Statutes 482.103 and 483.141 “Resident” defined.

“Resident” includes, but is not limited to, a person:
1. Whose legal residence is in the State of Nevada.
2. Who engages in intrastate business and operates in such a business any motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer, or any person maintaining such vehicles in this state, as the home state of such vehicles.
3. Who physically resides in this state and engages in a trade, profession, occupation or accepts gainful employment in this state.
4. Who declares himself to be a resident of this state to obtain privileges not ordinarily extended to nonresidents of this state.
The term does not include a person who is an actual tourist, an out-of-state student, a border state employee or a seasonal resident.

If you’re visiting from abroad and plan to rent a car in the United States, keep in mind that foreign driver’s licenses are usually recognized in the U.S., but you may want to consider obtaining an international driver’s license. A cyclist is required to ride on the right side of the roadway.
Cyclists ride in a traffic lane, staying to the far right as practicable unless preparing to turn or overtake another vehicle.
Cyclists must obey all traffic signs and signals and use hand signals to let others know what they plan to do.
Inexperienced riders, especially children, require special courtesy and care. They may not always follow traffic rules. Be especially careful around these riders and expect the unexpected.
