Detailed Comparison 2016

Alternative 1: Twitter API

The base example is alternativeeconomics.co that is based on the Twitter API and its RSS Feed.  Reasons not to use Twitter API are the following:

  1. Fees to be paid to Twitter
  2. Difficult integration process (details here).
  3. Emphasis on Twitter is on news. We like more distinguished content.

Alternative 2: Feedly lists and “curated content”

For this alternative we would use the existing plugin with some design extension and public Feeds.

We would create new curated content in Feedly, which is publicly available. They have public feeds.

Issues:

  1. It will take a lot of time to make the parser
  2. it will be slow, if we don’t create cache
  3. Feedly has a lot of java-scripts and Ajax, which will create us problems for parsing the content
  4. Probably fees to Feedly

Alternative 3: Extend the existing plugin with full-fledged RSS feed.

We would shows a proper RSS feed inside a widget or similar. We would not use Feedly.

We can choose between current RSS plugin. There we have to make one feed from many sources and recreate the feedly functionality. The second option is to use different plugin on which we have to change the design a little.

Alternative 3A: Feedzy RSS feed

An example is shows on this page.

Feedzy RSS feed

I made research on which plugin will fits our needs. I found  the Feedzy RSS feed and test it. It will be the easiest way to create feed. With him we can create private or public feeds. We can create as many feeds as we want from different sources and on different topics (categories). We can recreate easily the alterantiveeconomics functionality. We will need some time to create the same categories as your feedly.

Alternative 3B: WP RSS Aggregator

The second plugin which I found and test is WP RSS Aggregator. This plugin is more complex than the first one. It has cache, so we can pull the content once or twice per hour. We can create easily beauty designs. We also can add as many feeds as we want. The only problem is that this will be a little bit slow than the first plugin.

Comparison among the pure RSS Feeds

I test both of them and spend some time using them. I can strongly recommend alternative 3B, Feedzy. We easily can add only one category and see if it will works correctly. If it is fast enough and have the needed functionality – Rad or me can add the rest sources. In that time we can change the design to fit our colors.

Alternative 4: Import RSS feed as posts into our DB

As opposed to alternative2, we would parse the RSS feed and load the excerpts of the feed into our DB.
The text of the RSS Feed, the excerpt, would become itself a post. We would need to create the authors of those blogs inside our DB, using the follow author light plugin with an author text for the blog.

The blog name would be become a category, the author name potentially a sub-category of this “blog category”. The import of the blogs RSS would happen during the night, when traffic is low.

We have three alternatives:

The clear leader is FeedWordpress with 871719 downloads and over 70000 installs, as opposed to the more newspaper-oriented SyndicatePress with 48000 downloads.
