We discussed that the post name of an URL should contain at most 5 or 6 words. But even if we exclude our common stop words and many adjectives and adverbs,  maintaining mostly nouns, there are often more words inside the URL. Therefore we must eliminate additional nouns. Moreover we exclude the 4000 common words of the language unless they are “significant nouns”.

Common Words are Stop Words

In addition to the existing stop words lists, we exclude common words. Many of them might already on the stop words lists, but still some might be missing.

 

Insignificant nouns are stop words

Here many nouns are excluded because they are “sentiment words” or other words that enforce another noun in the URL

 

Example words: sake, difficulty, selection, signal, sight, launch, assumption, similarity, section, specialist, observation, stance, senator, bunch, burden, fear, fatigue, development

Questions to ask: fear of what?, development of what?, difficulty of what?

Example1:

Old Title Post: “Mr Hodonow a specialist of eastern European culture”

gives the URL: Hodonow-eastern-European-culture

All words except the ones with “NO” shall be on this stop words list.

 

Example2:

“Senator Holden’s introductionary remarks”
gives URL: Holden-remarks

Example 3:
“The launch of project Maiden”
gives URL: project-Maiden

 

List of insignificant nouns

Insignificant nouns can be retrieved via the following method:
1) Are they often used with “of” or “to”

Examples:
the Department of
the credibility of
the depart of
the evening of
the length of
the expedition to
the entrance to

Not the initial word (department, credibility, depart,entrance) is important, but the word after the “of” or “to”.

2) Are they used in a compound phrase?
Example: president Obama, counselor XYZ

For Google, it is enough to know that we speak about Obama. We do not need add the word president in the URL.

3) The type of an article.
Examples: diagnosis, conclusion, challenge, chapter,explanation,lesson

Your article is a diagnosis, a conclusion or is a definition.

You are allowed to write it in the title, but not in the URL, please.

4) Valuation of something

Examples: error, mistake, evidence,expectation,exception, fantasy, possibility, probability

Significant nouns are

Plural form:
The plural form of these words is not removed. Plural is an indication that the focus lies on this word.

Uncountable words:
A lot of uncountable words are not considered as stop words, neither, unless they are often used in the “of”-form

Examples: credit, honey, money,

Y words if they do not express a valuation:
inventory, photography,property
